When does Daylight Saving Time Begin in 2010?

Or, when does Standard Time end?

The answer:  it depends.

The United States, Canada and some other countries (such as Saint Pierre & Miquelon and Turks & Caicos Islands) extended Daylight Savings Time in 2007. The new start date for DST is the second Sunday in March (previously the first Sunday in April) through to the first Sunday in November (previously the last Sunday in October).

That is March 14, 2010.

You can thank (or blame) President Bush  for signing into law a broad energy bill that extended Daylight Saving Time by four weeks starting in 2007.  Those four extra weeks were supposed to bring massive savings in energy bills.

But now that I’m in Italy, Daylight Savings begins on March 28, 2010 (the last Sunday in March).  In fact, since 1996, European Summer Time is standard across the EU.

So for two weeks, the time difference to North America will be off by an hour!  So watch those conference calls!

Exceptions to the Rule in North America (and elsewhere)

In Canada, the majority of Saskatchewan and parts of north-eastern British Columbia do not observe DST but instead stay on “standard time” all year long.

In the USA, Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Nation), Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa are the only places in the USA that do not observe DST.

2009: DST starts Monday, June 1 – DST ends Friday, August 21

No DST in 2010

Pakistan
DST starts Thursday, April 15 – DST ends Thursday, November 1

Syria
DST starts Friday, March 26 – DST ends Friday, October 29

Effects Similar to Time Zone Travels by Air

The one hour time difference, either from Standard Time to Daylight Savings Time, or traveling though several time zones makes a difference on your sleep patterns. At least temporarily.

Daylight Savings Time will create an adjustment period, similar to long distance travel (cross country or overseas), as it could take up to one day per time zone traveled. My advice is to try to fight it right away, even if it means a few groggy mornings. It’s really mind over matter.

The First Day of Spring in 2010  : March 1 – the first day of spring. At last! The cold winter is over, the weather changed for the better. When you write these words, I myself hiding from the sun bright. It’s already so hot outside (it’s not usually).

We are making plans for the future, and we are waiting for the best! So, let’s enjoy this beautiful season, because it will help a lot to become, or to a person, to remain optimistic, as is the case in the nature of awakening.

Medal Count 2010 Winter Olympics

he winter Olympics are over with a graceful closing ceremony that featured Catherine O’Hara, Michael J. Fox and William Shatner. Canada had incurred heavy expenses on hosting the games and training the athletes towin the podium. However Unites States emerged as the overall winner in medal count 2010 winter Olympics. US athletes have set a new record with 37 medals the previous world record was made by Germany with 36 medals in Salt Lake winter Olympics 2002.

Germany was 7 medals behind USA although it has won ten gold medals compared to nine of United States. The North American nations have occupied 1st and 3rd rank on medal count 2010 winter Olympics. Canadian dream to own the podium has not materialized but the athletes of Canada managed to make a new world record of winning highest number of gold medals. They have won 14 gold medals the pervious record was of 13 gold medals held jointly by Russia and Norway. Canada earned its last gold medal on the final day of the winter Olympics in ice hockey finals. This was perhaps the most aspired medal for Canadians.

The all time medal winner Norway finished at 4th place with 23 medals while Austria finished at 5th place with 16 medals. The Russians Federation was at 6th place on medal count 2010 winter Olympics. Koreans have emerged as a major team in winter Olympics with 14 medals.

Norway still tops the all time medal count with 280 medals and United States is just behind her with 216 medals.

USA is top of the table with 37 medals including 9 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze. Alpine skier Bode Miller won a set of medals, gold, silver and a bronze. Short track speed skater Aplo Anton Ohno also won three medals making total Olympics medals eight. Bill Demon was the first-ever American who won a gold medal in Nordic Combined.

No. 2 position was caught by Germany who won 30 medals including 10 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze. They won 10 gold medals, second highest after Canada.

Third position was won by host Canada with 26 medals including 14 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze.

Norway finished event in fourth place winning 9 gold medals, equivalent to USA. Norwegian Marit Bjoergen won five medals in cross-country skiing, three gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Hawaii Under Tsunami Warning

Hawaii is under a tsunami warning following a massive earthquake that struck central Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said a tsunami advisory was in effect for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal island area from Kodiak to Attu.

The center says a tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the Hawaii. It said a tsunami in California and Alaska was possible.

The Ewa (EH-vah) Beach, Hawaii-based tsunami center says the first waves are expected to arrive at 11:19 a.m. Saturday (4:19 p.m. EST).

The center called for "urgent action to protect lives and property" in Hawaii, which is among 53 nations and territories subject to tsunami warnings.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile in 1960. The deadly wave that it caused raced across the Pacific and hit the Hilo area of the Big Island, where 61 people were killed.

CHILE EARTHQUAKE: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Chile: Live Broadcast

UPDATE: 4:15 a.m. -- Tsunami generated -- CNN International reports that the earthquake has generated a Tsunami. Warnings have been issued for Chile and Peru. A tsunami watch has been issued for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP)-- A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and a half and setting off a tsunami. Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine.

The quake hit 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST), the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.

An Associated Press Television News cameraman said some buildings collapsed in Santiago and power was out in parts of the city. Phone lines were either down or busy, making confirmation of damage difficult elsewhere, especially further south toward the epicenter. The quake was felt in Argentina as well.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the center said.

The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.
